LA/SPCA Mardi Gras Bead Dog® Project

The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LA/SPCA) is excited to launch a new public art celebration. Modeled after many successful New Orleans public art projects in recent years including: A Streetcar Named Inspire and Festival of Fins, this project will feature the iconic Mardi Gras Bead Dog® (design and mold donated by New Orleans’ very own Haydel’s Bakery.) Local artists will be featured throughout the project during sales, sketch displays at the unveiling event, recognition on sculptures, and press opportunities.

Call for Entries: Art Spill
Deadline October 5, 2010

Art Spill: Disaster, Art, Activism and Recovery is a multidisciplinary event that will explore how art objects have exposed disaster, facilitated recovery, and participated in political activity in post-Katrina New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Art Spill is sponsored by Ethnographic Terminalia and will be listed as part of a constellation of interdisciplinary events taking place during the American Anthropological Association (AAA) 109th Annual Meeting, to be held in New Orleans from November 17-20.

Art Spill will feature a juried show of artwork and crafts organized by Collective World Art Community. This multidisciplinary juried show will focus on empowering artists and individuals to contribute to the recovery of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region from natural and manmade disasters, currently the BP oil spill. This event will feature a silent auction on Saturday, November 20, 2010 and an online auction on www.tizm.com from October 19 – November 19 2010. All works of art submitted to this event and accepted for entry in the show will be for sale in this auction, at the opening reception on November 13 and throughout the events on November 20, accompanied by other items being auctioned or sold. Proceeds will be donated to the Defenders of the Coast and NOLA Emergency Response to help them fulfill their mission toward the recovery of the Gulf Coast from the BP oil spill.

Call to Artists: Baton Rouge Gallery

The mission of the Baton Rouge Gallery, as adopted by its board of directors in May, 1999, is to provide a forum for the arts, especially for professional visual artists to exhibit their art. The gallery places emphasis on education and enrichment, including multi-disciplinary arts programs. As a cooperative gallery, artistic decisions such as exhibit installations and artist membership are made by the existing artist membership.

Artists of all media are encouraged to apply free of charge. Applications must be received by Baton Rouge Gallery no later than 6 p.m. on October 5, 2010.

Public Art Call: Evansville, IN
Deadline October 15, 2010

In November 2011, Evansville, Indiana will celebrate the grand opening of a new 11,000-seat, multi-purpose arena. The open-air plaza adjoining the entrance to the new arena has been identified as the location for a major piece of public art. The New Evansville Arena Project, in cooperation with the Evansville Public Art Commission and the Evansville Arena Advisory Committee, intends to award a commission to an artist or artist team to design, plan, create, fabricate, transport and install a work of public art on this open-air plaza adjoining the entrance to the new Evansville arena. Budget $200,000.

Call to Artists: The Front

Who is it whom your little (or big) dog knows? How is your sense of (your)self mediated by or through your relationship with your dog? Does this self exist outside of the relationship?
Humans look into mirrors and recognize their own reflections; dogs look into mirrors to get a better angle of sight. Who do you see reflected in your dog's eyes?
How do you know what your dog knows?

Works exploring these issues with other species of companion animals are also eligible.

Works will be part of the exhibition "Standing Heat"-- featuring the work of internationally known new media artist Kathy High and in conjunction with a performance by the renowned Holly Hughes of her new work "The Dog and Pony Show"-- at The Front in New Orleans, November 13- December 5, 2010.

Public Art Call: Tamarac, FL

The Tamarac Public Art Committee is seeking to commission an artist or artist team to create flooring and seating at the Tamarac Municipal Complex. The Municipal Complex is the governmental center of the City. It contains administrative offices, meeting rooms and the City Commission Chambers. The artwork is to be placed within designated areas in City Hall’s main receiving area known as the Atrium. Total art budget $175,000.

Call to Photographers: WoRK

The New Orleans Photo Alliance is seeking images that depict the daily drudgery, struggle, joy, and determinism in the life of the human being. **'WoRK' will have a sister-show in Lawrence, KS at the Lawrence Percolator. Both shows will focus on the same subject, but utilize different mediums. Receptions will be linked up via web-cam.** Entry fee, $25 for NOPA members, $35 for non members.
